Fringe Survival Guide.
A little preparation. A lot of curiosity.

The audience survival kit.

General audience advice, not a substitute for the venue’s own booking, access and admission policies.

01

Leave room for the unexpected.

Choose something you love. Choose something you cannot quite explain. A little curiosity goes further than a perfect itinerary.

02

Your feet are not teleporters.

Check the actual venue address, allow time between shows and read the late arrival policy before you book.

03

Look after the audience. You included.

Read access information and content notes. Eat a proper meal. Silence your phone. Give independent artists your full attention.

Book the experience, not just the ticket

Read the listing all the way through. Check the performance language, duration, content notes and whether audience participation is involved. The glorious unknown is rather more enjoyable when it is a choice.

Make access part of the plan

Check the venue’s access details for the specific performance. Step free access, captions, audio description and relaxed performances are not interchangeable. Ask the organiser directly if the information you need is missing.

Support the people who make it happen

Use official ticket links. Read the payment model carefully, especially for free entry or contributions after the show. If you can, budget for artists as well as your own festival day.

Keep a tiny notebook

Write down the artist’s name, the thing that surprised you and the show you want to tell a friend about. Put the notebook away while the performance is happening. Being present is the best audience accessory.
